Black Fillings
You can now hav text-centere your teeth looking back the way nature intended. Not so many years ago, there were two types of fillings… silver or gold. Silver-mercury Amalgam has been the mainstay of dentistry for over 150 years. While it has served us well, the days of amalgam are numbered. Besides the fact that they become unsightly by turning black, amalgams have other drawbacks. Silver-mercury amalgam requires removal of tooth beyond the decay in order to allow it to lock mechanically into the tooth. The need for additional removal of tooth structure to retain silver-mercury amalgam may weaken teeth and leave them more prone to fracture.
Tooth Colored Fillings
If you are concerned about replacing your silver fillings, please read our webpage: Should I Remove My Silver Mercury Fillings? New materials and techniques have enabled us to provide what you have wanted all along: Tooth Colored Fillings. Instead of unattractive silver amalgam, we use tooth-colored life-like biocompatible material, called composite Composite fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium that produces a tooth-colored filling. They are sometimes referred to as composites or filled resins.
Composite Filling
Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when the dentist prepares the tooth, and this may result in a smaller filling than that of an amalgam. Composites are also “bonded” or adhesively held in a cavity, often allowing us to make a more conservative repair to the tooth.
